Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seeds have traditionally been cultivated as a multipurpose crop serving as a source of fibres for the textile and food industries and used in other products, including health and medicinal products.
The recent availability and use of hemp oil in Europe and USA is associated with health benefits such as the fast healing of cuts and helping cure ailments ranging from burns to flu, as well as improvement in allergy and inflammatory symptoms2.
Most of these health claims, if not all of them, derive from the unique profile of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) found in hemp oil that include prostaglandins and other important metabolites.
Oil from the Canabis sativa L. seed typically comprises 90% unsaturated fats2.
The dietary PUFAs and their biological metabolites can favourably influence the LDL cholesterol profile, compared to the ingestion of saturated fats in food that are heavily linked to the development of heart disease. Therefore, a diet that has sufficient levels of PUFAs can lead to a fall in the LDL cholesterol levels in blood and a lowering of blood pressure. PUFAs also increase the bleeding time by diminishing platelet aggregation, which leads to a lowering of peripheral blood pressure and formation of clots.
A recent study on a mixture of oats and hemp as a substantial source of nutrition was carried out in the Czech Republic, with the respective report revealing that the application of hemp in the treatment of tuberculosis without using antibiotics led to favourable results. More recent evidence backs up the use of fatty acids to treat this disease.
Albumin and edestin are lobular proteins and the two main proteins contained in hemp and both are rich in essential amino acids, containing sulphur, methionine and cystine, as well as high levels of arginine and glutamic acid.
A direct comparison of the protein amino acids in egg white, hemp and soya show that hemp protein is comparable to the other two proteins.
